ed tech day: Making educational video
This is a summary of a session delivered at ed tech day June 2019, with additional resources. In this presentation, Jon Davidson will examine why video is an important tool for the 21st-century educator. He will discuss areas where video can be most effective, give ideas on what type of video works in education and offer some quick tips on how you can get involved and start making your own.
Video is everywhere. We can watch anything we want, at any time in any location. The wider world’s obsession with video is inevitably reflected in the education environment. Video is transforming the way we teach, learn and study. Students have come to accept and even expect video as part of their education experience. But while some educators have embraced the idea of a new tool with which to present information, others remain hesitant.
Video production itself, once in the hands of a few technical professionals, is now firmly within the grasp of us all. We can capture, edit and publish high-quality video without the need to invest a great deal of time, money and resource. It has never been easier. So how can we as educators make the best use of this powerful and versatile tool?
Who can make an educational video?
We hope to inspire and encourage the use of video for a variety of needs across Durham University Business School. Our future workshop is designed for anyone interested in producing their own video for teaching, promotional or basic communication purposes. Participants should have an interest in creating video, but prior knowledge is not necessary.
How can it be used effectively in teaching?
Video is a rich medium, combining visual and audio information. Video gives us the ability to produce engaging and thought-provoking content for students. It has numerous uses from assisting the cognitive process to demonstrating experiential material and nurturing the students. The type of video will depend on the expected outcomes and EDU has a wealth of experience that will help you produce effective video content.
How can I get started?
Look out for our upcoming hands-on workshop on making an effective educational video.
